Game Summary: The Skyline JV team ended their season with a game of solid team pitching, solid team defense, and timely hitting for a 9-3 win. Garfield struck early with 2 runs in the first, but Skyline immediately answered with 3 of our own, taking the lead on consecutive singles by Jordan Cardwell and Michael Ishii. The game stayed at 3-2 until the Spartans scored 5 in the bottom of four for an 8-2 lead on a double by Austin Nutt, singles by Matt Dompier and Michael Stewart, and a triple by Brandon Fischer. Four Spartan pitchers backed by errorless fielding defense combined to limit Garfield to 4 hits during the contest.

Skyline JV record 11-9 4/30/2010 Skyline JV vs. Redmond JV Skyline HS Friday 4/30/2010 Skyline 13 Redmond 3 Game Summary: The Redmond Mustangs scored the games first run in the top of the first, but the Spartans answered in the bottom half of the first and took a 3-1 lead on a 2 out 2RBI double by Travis Snider. The Mustangs rally for 2 runs in the third, and at the end of three, the Spartans held a 5-3 lead and we appeared headed for a close ballgame. Skyline explodes for 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth combining 4 consecutive hits with 4 Redmond errors to take an 11-3 lead. Skyline also collects four consecutive hits in the bottom of the fifth; including the game ending 2RBI single by Joe Beattie to send the Mustangs home early. 4/28/2010 Skyline JV vs. Issaquah JV Issaquah HS Wednesday 4/28/2010 Issaquah 8 Skyline 2 Game Summary: Unfortunately, Issaquah Eagles starting pitcher Brandon Mahovlich celebrated his 16th birthday with quite a day against the Spartans. Mahovlich delivered the big blow in the bottom of the first with a 3 run HR and his 107 pitch effort over six innings held the Spartan offense in check allowing 2ER on 4 hits, with 7K’s and 4BBs. Skyline scored their 2 runs in the third inning on a 1 out triple by Connor Gilchrist, who eventually scored on a wild pitch, and singles by Clayton Huber and Joe Beattie. 4/26/2010 Skyline JV vs Newport JV Skyline HS Monday 4/26/2010 Newport 5 Skyline 4 Game Summary: Threatened by a rainstorm on a Monday afternoon, Skyline hosted Newport for the second game between the two teams this season. The first game was a disappointing loss for the Spartans as a 1-1 game turned into a 7-1 loss in a game Skyline gave away when they gave up 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Hopes to send the Knights home with a loss were dashed on another day where fielding errors played a large part in the outcome of the game. Skyline starting pitcher, Matt Lunde was dominant early striking out the side in 3 of the first 4 innings and totaled 10 K’s in 4.1 innings pitched. Newport’s starter matched Lunde with zero’s for the first 3 innings when Newport took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th on an unearned run. Skyline managed their own unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to even the score but failed to score more than the single run after loading the bases with no outs. The fifth inning saw the offenses chase each of the starters with Newport scoring 4 runs, 2 of them unearned taking a 5-1 lead. Skyline returned fire in their half of the fifth with 3 runs of their own. Jordan Cardwell came on in relief of Lunde and held the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the game but the Spartan offense could not find a way to score against the Newport reliever. Five errors on the game for the Spartans made the difference in the game as 4 of the 6 runs allowed were unearned. The Skyline squad continued a really strong string of well pitched games as Travis Snider pitched the first 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs while Ryan Parks came on in relief and ran his streak of innings giving up no runs to 7+. Skyline pitchers have allowed 10 earned runs over the last 4 games. Eric Thies and Joe Beattie led the Skyline offense with 2 hits each but this game was determined by defensive errors by the Spartans that made it difficult to come back. 4/21/2010 Skyline JV vs Eastlake JV 2/21/2010 Skyline JV vs Garfield JV Bobby Morris Field-Seattle Wednesday 2/21/2010 Skyline 5 Garfield 4 Game Summary: On a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Bobby Morris field on Capitol Hill the Spartan bats cooled off a bit so good defense and pitching had to create the win. The Skyline offense collected 7 hits led by the 2 hits from Patrick Harrod to score 1 run in the second and 4 runs in the fourth to give the Spartans all the scoring they would need to come back to the Plateau with a win and bring their record to 9-6 on the season. Brandon Lundeberg got the start for Skyline and went 4.2 innings spreading out 7 Garfield hits and allowing 4 runs getting the win. Eric Thies came on for his second appearance in two days and this time, in a Save situation, and got the final 7 outs giving up only 1 hit for the Spartans without allowing a run. On a day when the Spartan JV had 8 different players collect hits and 6 different players collect RBI’s…five players with 2 each…the Skyline JV squad ran away from the Inglemoor Vikings by a score of 11-3. Matt Lunde started for the Spartans and rolled out another outstanding appearance, pitching 6 innings and giving up only 2 earned runs while striking out 9 Viking batters. His day was best punctuated in the 4th inning when he struck out 4 Viking batters to close the victory out for the Spartans. Michael Parducci led the Skyline offense with 3 hits while a pack of 6 Spartan batters adding a pair of hits each. Digging themselves an early hole, allowing 5 runs in the first inning and 3 runs in the second inning, the Spartans were forced to try to battle from behind to make a game of it. Ryan Parks came on in the second inning and held EC scoreless for the remainder of the game allowing the offense to try to put together a rally. Although the Skyline JV put together 10 hits, they were unable to string enough of them together to score runs. The Spartans picked up a run in the third on a RBI double from Clayton Huber with two outs in the inning but could not advance the runner from there. Two more runs were added in the 4th on a RBI single by Michael Ishii and a run scored on an error but EC managed to hold the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the game. 4/16/2010 Skyline JV vs Bothell JV Bothell HS Friday 4/16/2010 Bothell 8 Skyline 7 Game Summary: In a busy week of 5 games, the Skyline JV squad traveled to Bothell to take on the Cougars in game 4 of the week on Friday night. The run of 3 wins in a row was not able to be extended to 4 as Skyline battled back from deficits all game long but could not hold on in the bottom of the 7th. Bothell jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings of play behind their starting pitcher, Carlin. Skyline started slowly but picked up a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the score. The bottom of the fifth resulted in the Cougars scoring 3 runs on 2 hits and an error to take a 6-3 lead into the top of the sixth inning. The Spartans struck back quickly with four runs, highlighted by a 2 out one run single by Patrick Harrod who was followed by another one run single by Matt Dompier taking the Skyline JV squad into the bottom of the 6thth inning, got the Spartans out of the inning with 2 K’s and after a scoreless top of the 7th, the Spartans went into the bottom half of the inning looking for 3 outs. Bothell battled back scoring the tying run on an error and with the infield drawn in and the outfield playing shallow depth, a Bothell single to CF scored the winning run. with a one run lead. 4/15/2010 Skyline JV vs Woodinville JV Skyline HS Thursday April 15, 2010 Skyline 6 Woodinville 2 Game Summary: The Skyline JV squad hosted the 9-1 Woodinville JV squad on Thursday afternoon and sent them on a long bus ride home with a 6-2 loss. Extending their week of excellent pitching, the Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead as starter Travis Snider gave them 4 full innings of 4 hit baseball. Clayton Huber relieved in the 5th inning and brought the Skyline team home with 3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Combined, the Spartan pitchers struck out 5 batters, walking only 1 and allowing the 2 runs. The Spartan offense continued their hot week of hitting adding another 11 hits on the day to their week, totaling 37 hits in the three games played this week. The JV squad is hitting .407 in their three games this week and hoping to add more on Friday against Bothell and Saturday when they face neighboring Eastside Catholic. The offense on the day was led by Conner Reinertsen with 2 doubles, Connor Gilchrist with a 2 RBI triple, two singles from Zack Liddle and Clayton Huber and hits from Austin Nutt, Ian Smith, Joe Beattie and Jordan Cardwell. 4/14/2010 Skyline JV vs Ballard JV Skyline HS Wednesday April 14, 2010 Skyline 8 Ballard 1 Game Summary: Finally, a baseball game in Springlike conditions and the Spartans JV stepped up for a well played game on their home field. Five full innings from starting pitcher Matt Lunde staked the Spartans to a 7-1 lead as he gave up only 3 hits. Zack Liddle came on to preserve the win for Skyline and pitched the final two innings allowing only 2 hits. Lunde goes to 3-0 for the season. The Spartans bats continued to produce hits as they built on their last game against Roosevelt and produced another 11 hits against Beaver pitching. Skyline has now totaled 26 hits in their last 13 innings at the plate. With a tough matchup against Woodinville on the schedule for Thursday afternoon, the Spartans will expect to continue their hot hitting and strong week of pitching performances with the Skyline pitchers only giving up 4 runs in the last two games. The Spartan JV tallied 15 hits against Roosevelt and roughed up the Roughriders for a 10-3 win. 10 Spartan batters collected hits on a day where everything was hit hard with 7 individual players contributed runs by crossing the plate. A very different type of game for the Spartans defense where there were as many put outs at home plate as there were at first base (3), the defense showed a big improvement from their game on Saturday which they will hope to continue to build on. On a week where the Spartans need pitchers to give them innings with 5 games scheduled for the week, they got fine performances by Ryan Parks going 4 innings and Eric Thies closing out the last 3. The Spartans jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 3 innings but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game on a fine pitching performance from Liberty’s starting pitcher, Styskal, who pitched a complete game 5 hitter striking out 6 Spartans. The fifth inning determined the outcome of the game as Liberty collected 4 hits with Skyline’s defense contributing 2 errors allowing 4 of the 6 runs that scored to be unearned. In a game where the Spartans found almost every way to get a runner on base including 6 hits, 9 BB’s and 5 hit batters…Skyline needed all 9 runs manufactured to pull out a win. The Spartans appeared to be on their way to running away from the Kangs building what became a 5-1 lead after their half of the 6th inning on a strong pitching performance by Matt Lunde, who gave up only 2 hits and 0 ER’s while striking out 8 Kangs in his 5.1 IP but the Kangs attempted to battle back picking up 2 runs in their half of the 6th inning. Both teams made getting an out in the 7th inning harder than it needed to be with the Spartans building a 9-3 lead scoring 4 runs in their half of the inning through no hits, 3 BB’s, 3 hit batters, and 2 errors. Not to be outdone, the Spartans allowed 4 runs themselves on 4 singles and 2 fielding errors as well. Zack Liddle got the final out on a strike out looking to end the game. Issaquah racked up 12 hits (including 4 infield hits) and benefited from 3 Skyline errors to take down the Spartans 7-1 on a chilly Thursday afternoon. Skyline never got anything going with the offense putting runners on base in 6 out of 7 innings but only scoring 1 run on a total of 3 hits, including 2 by Michael Parducci. Four Skyline pitchers combined to strike out 7 batters and give up 4 earned runs. This was a game that proved that sometimes all you have to do is put the ball in play and good things will happen…that was certainly the case for Issaquah. Score: Skyline 6, Redmond 5 Game Summary: Skyline’s bats finally came around as the team accumulated 10 hits against Redmond on Wednesday afternoon. Skyline jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third before giving up a run to Redmond. The Spartans increased their lead to 6-1 in the top of the sixth but Redmond rallied for 3 runs in their half of the inning resulting in a two run lead going into the 7th inning. Skyline failed to get a base runner on in their half of the inning sending the game into the bottom of the 7th with a 6-4 score. Redmond managed to load the bases on an infield single, a base hit to LF and a hit batter before a ground ball to the right side of the infield scored a run. With runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs, the next batter lined out to 3rd base to end the game. Newport Knights strike for 7 two out runs in the bottom of the sixth and stop a Spartan scoring threat in the seventh for a 7-1 win.
